Authorities in Warrap State, South Sudan, have confirmed that 11 people were killed and 24 others wounded in a violent cattle raid in Tonj North County. The attack, which occurred over the weekend, was reportedly carried out by armed youth from Mayom County in neighboring Unity State.
The assailants targeted a cattle camp in the Lou Ariik area, opening fire and triggering panic among herders and villagers. Warrap State officials, speaking to local media, described the raid as one of the most deadly in recent months, emphasizing the growing concern over cross-border cattle-related violence in the region.
Medical teams responded to the scene, and the injured are currently being treated at nearby health facilities. Local authorities say security forces have been deployed to prevent further attacks and to stabilize the area.
The government of Warrap State has called on Unity State authorities to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, while urging both communities to pursue peaceful conflict resolution. The latest incident adds to a series of recurring clashes over cattle and land in South Sudan’s northern regions, where longstanding grievances and weak local policing continue to fuel violence.
Humanitarian organizations have expressed concern over the growing number of displaced families and the disruption to livelihoods in Tonj North. Peace efforts remain ongoing, though community leaders say more robust measures are needed to address the root causes of the violence.
