Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a historic multi-nation diplomatic tour beginning July 2, which will culminate in his first-ever state visit to Namibia on July 9, 2025. The visit to the Southern African nation marks a significant milestone as it will be Prime Minister Modi’s inaugural trip to Namibia, and only the third by an Indian Prime Minister in the country’s history. The governmental website of the Prime Minister confirmed that the visit is at the invitation of Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who assumed office in March 2025.
The strategic five-nation tour, which spans both Africa and Latin America, highlights India’s deepening engagement with the Global South. Prime Minister Modi’s itinerary prior to Namibia includes Ghana (July 2-3), Trinidad and Tobago (July 3-4), Argentina (July 4-5), and Brazil (July 5-8), where he will attend the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
During his visit to Namibia, Prime Minister Modi’s program will feature key engagements aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. He is scheduled to hold extensive discussions with President Nandi-Ndaitwah to review existing cooperation and explore new avenues for partnership. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has indicated that the visit will focus on deepening economic engagement, particularly in areas like mineral resources such as uranium, copper, cobalt, rare earths, lithium, graphite, and tantalum, as well as potential partnerships in newly discovered oil fields. Discussions are also expected to cover cooperation in agriculture and pharmaceuticals, with India potentially offering low-cost solutions like its Unified Payment Interface (UPI) system, for which an agreement has already been signed between the Central Bank of Namibia and NPCI International.
Beyond economic and strategic talks, the visit will carry significant symbolic weight. Prime Minister Modi is slated to pay homage at the resting site of Namibia’s Founding President, Dr. Sam Nujoma, honoring the historical ties and India’s long-standing support for Namibia’s independence struggle. A key highlight of the visit will also be Prime Minister Modi’s address to the Parliament of Namibia, providing an opportunity to reiterate India’s commitment to its multi-faceted relationship with the nation. This early visit in President Nandi-Ndaitwah’s tenure is seen by the MEA as crucial for renewing and deepening the relationship between the two countries.
