A large-scale protest, dubbed “THE DAY OF THE PEOPLE,” is scheduled to take place in Liberia on Thursday, July 17, 2025, as organizers demand accountability from the government of President Joseph Boakai and push for urgent reforms.
The protest, led by a coalition of activists and civil society groups including STAND (Strategic Alliance for National Democracy), is a response to mounting public frustrations over a range of issues affecting the country. Organizers have cited concerns including widespread corruption, the high cost of living, and instances of police brutality.
According to statements from the protest planners, specific grievances against the Boakai administration include:
- Accountability for Public Funds: Calls for the government to provide transparency regarding the utilization of national resources, often referred to as “The Masses Money.”
- Delayed Asset Declaration: Complaints regarding the slow pace of asset declaration by government officials, a key transparency measure.
- President Boakai’s Private Flying: Criticism over the President’s use of private air travel, contrasting with public expectations for fiscal austerity.
- High Prices of Goods and Services: Protests against the rising cost of essential commodities and the broader economic collapse.
- Police Brutality: Demands for the dismissal of high-ranking police officials following unresolved incidents of alleged brutality and disappearances.
- Rising Drug Issues: Concerns over the increase in drug use and related social issues.
- Pervasive Corruption: A general outcry against perceived widespread corruption within the government.
STAND has described the planned mobilization as a “bold and defiant response” to what they term a “culture of impunity and political intimidation” under the current administration. Organizers have vowed to hold a peaceful but unwavering demonstration aimed at forcing the government to address these concerns and implement systemic reforms.
