H1-v1.2 Liberian Senate Unanimously Confirms Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay as Liberia’s Chief Justice

Liberia’s Senate has unanimously confirmed Associate Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay as the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, signaling a significant shift in the country’s judiciary. The confirmation was made during a plenary session on Thursday, with all 24 Senators present voting in favor of his appointment, following a favorable recommendation from the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Justice Gbeisay was nominated by President Joseph Boakai in June to replace Chief Justice Sie-A‑Nyene Gyapay Yuoh, who retired after reaching the constitutional age limit of 70. Gbeisay, who has served on the Supreme Court Bench since October 2022, is widely respected for his legal acumen and professional discipline. His career includes previous service as a Circuit Court judge and legal counsel in various public institutions.

The motion for his confirmation was introduced by Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon, receiving unanimous support from the chamber—an endorsement seen as a testament to Gbeisay’s reputation and qualifications.

According to the Liberian Constitution, the Chief Justice serves until the age of 70 and is responsible for presiding over the Supreme Court and ensuring the effective operation of the country’s judiciary. Justice Gbeisay’s confirmation comes at a time when judicial independence and reform are at the forefront of public discourse.

Observers say his leadership will be pivotal as Liberia works to strengthen rule of law, judicial accountability, and legal sector reforms.

Justice Gbeisay is expected to be officially sworn in after receiving a presidential commissioning.
