Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Sunday underscored the critical importance of the Nile River to Egypt’s national security during a high-level meeting in Cairo with U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) chief Gen. Michael Kurilla. The assertion highlights Egypt’s unwavering stance on its vital water resources amidst regional developments.

During their discussions, President al-Sisi stressed that the Nile River is an existential matter for Egypt, a nation heavily reliant on the river for over 95% of its freshwater needs. His remarks come against a backdrop of ongoing regional sensitivities, particularly concerning the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Blue Nile, which Egypt views with apprehension regarding its potential impact on downstream water flows.

The meeting between President al-Sisi and Gen. Kurilla also covered a broad spectrum of regional security challenges. Both officials reviewed the latest developments in Gaza, Syria, Libya, Sudan, and the Horn of Africa, emphasizing the need for de-escalation and the pursuit of sustainable political solutions to ongoing crises. President al-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s intensive efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, facilitate hostage exchanges, and ensure the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to the enclave.

Gen. Kurilla conveyed greetings from U.S. President Donald Trump, which President al-Sisi welcomed, reaffirming the deep strategic partnership between Egypt and the United States. The discussions underscored the importance of enhancing bilateral cooperation and joint coordination, particularly in military and security fields, to support regional and international peace and stability.
