The Government of Türkiye is advancing plans to establish a resident diplomatic mission in Liberia, in a move officials say will strengthen bilateral cooperation and unlock new economic opportunities between the two countries.

The development was discussed on Monday, March 23, 2026, when Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, received a high-level Turkish delegation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia. The delegation’s visit focused on logistical and diplomatic steps toward opening an embassy in Liberia.

Welcoming the delegation on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., Minister Nyanti emphasized the importance of deepening diplomatic engagement and expanding economic cooperation. She noted that Liberia views the proposed embassy not only as a symbol of strengthened relations but also as a gateway for increased trade, investment, and technical collaboration.

The Minister referenced her engagements in 2025 with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, highlighting his expressed commitment to supporting key infrastructure in Liberia. Among these is the revitalization of Roberts International Airport, which she described as central to the country’s broader connectivity and economic ambitions.

She further acknowledged Türkiye’s role in facilitating the anticipated entry of Turkish Airlines into Liberia, noting that the airline’s operations could significantly enhance international access and commercial exchange. According to Minister Nyanti, President Erdoğan had directed relevant institutions to explore ways to support the efficient functioning of the airport alongside the expansion of air links.

Speaking for the visiting delegation, Mr. Mustafa Kemel Basa, Deputy Director General for Administrative and Financial Issues at Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed appreciation for the reception and reaffirmed his government’s interest in strengthening its presence in Liberia.

He explained that Türkiye traditionally prioritizes establishing an embassy before expanding commercial ventures. However, he indicated that, following high-level engagements between President Erdoğan and Minister Nyanti, Ankara has accelerated efforts to ensure that both the embassy’s establishment and the launch of Turkish Airlines operations proceed concurrently.

Mr. Basa also formally requested land for the embassy under diplomatic reciprocity arrangements—an issue Liberia’s Foreign Ministry says it will address promptly. He added that the delegation would engage with security agencies and officials at the Executive Mansion to ensure all requirements for the mission’s establishment are met.

Beyond diplomacy, both sides signaled a broader economic vision. Minister Nyanti encouraged Turkish investors to consider opportunities within the Mano River Union basin, positioning Liberia as a strategic hub for regional trade rather than a standalone market. She described the initiative as part of Liberia’s economic diplomacy drive aimed at delivering mutual benefits.

In addition, Mr. Basa reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to human capacity development in Liberia, pointing to ongoing and potential scholarship opportunities for Liberian students.

Discussions also touched on Liberia’s diplomatic footprint in Türkiye. The Turkish official encouraged the Liberian government to advance plans for opening an embassy in Ankara and a consulate in Istanbul, extending an invitation to Minister Nyanti to visit Ankara to further formalize the next steps.

The planned establishment of a Turkish embassy in Monrovia is widely seen as a significant step in broadening Türkiye’s engagement in West Africa, while offering Liberia new avenues for international partnership, infrastructure support, and economic growth.
