Liberia is strengthening its international outreach through sports diplomacy following high-level discussions in Madrid between senior government officials and the Real Madrid Foundation.
The engagement, facilitated by the Embassy of the Republic of Liberia near Paris, brought together Liberia’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Cornelia Wonkerleh Kruah, and the Foundation’s Managing Director, Julio Gonzalez Ronco, in talks focused on expanding opportunities for young Liberians through sport and education.
Also in attendance were Liberia’s Ambassador to France, Teeko Tozay Yorlay Sr., and Joseph Nyuma Boakai Jr., highlighting a coordinated diplomatic effort aimed at building strategic global partnerships.
Officials familiar with the discussions said the initiative reflects a broader national strategy to position sports as a vehicle for social impact, youth empowerment, and community development. The talks explored potential collaboration in sports-based education programs and other initiatives designed to support young people.
The meeting, held at the Foundation’s headquarters, remains at an exploratory stage, but both sides expressed optimism about establishing a formal framework for cooperation. The Real Madrid Foundation, known for its global work in education and social inclusion through sport, indicated its willingness to further engage with Liberia.
Minister Kruah emphasized the government’s commitment to forging partnerships that align international expertise with Liberia’s development priorities, noting that sports can serve as a powerful catalyst for positive social change.
Sources say the discussions were driven in part by the efforts of Joseph Boakai Jr., whose role in convening the meeting reflects ongoing attempts to link Liberian institutions with world-class organizations capable of delivering long-term impact.
The Embassy is expected to continue consultations with stakeholders, including the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as Liberia seeks to translate the engagement into a sustainable initiative that benefits young people across the country.
