Cairo, Egypt – Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has been appointed Acting General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football, following the resignation of longtime CAF chief Véron Mosengo-Omba, CAF announced on Sunday.
Adamu’s appointment was ratified at CAF’s Congress meeting held on 29 March 2026 at the Giza Palace Hotel in Cairo, with his nomination first proposed by the CAF Executive Committee and formally approved by the congress.
He takes over from Swiss‑Congolese Mosengo‑Omba, who resigned from the role on the same day after more than a decade in CAF administration. Adamu, who previously served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, assumes the position immediately and will oversee the day‑to‑day operations of the secretariat in the interim.
The appointment marks a historic moment for Nigerian football, as Adamu becomes the first Nigerian to serve as acting General Secretary of CAF since the continental governing body was founded nearly seven decades ago.
Adamu’s experience in managing CAF’s competitions, including club and national team tournaments across Africa, positioned him as a leading contender for the acting role. His elevation comes at a time when CAF continues implementing governance reforms and preparing its administrative leadership ahead of major upcoming events, including continental qualifiers and the next Africa Cup of Nations cycle.
