NAYMOTE Liberia Leads Civic Programs on Democracy and Accountability

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – For many Liberians, March offered a firsthand look at what it means to actively participate in democracy and governance. Citizens, students, and emerging leaders took part in a series of programs led by Naymote Partners for Democratic Development, designed to strengthen civic engagement and accountability across the country.

Over 100 participants attended the Third Summit for Democracy and Political Accountability, where they explored practical ways to ensure inclusion, uphold the rule of law, and make governance more transparent. For many, the summit was more than a discussion—it was an opportunity to develop solutions that could affect their communities directly.

Young leaders from AME Zion University completed a six-week leadership program that equipped them with skills to drive ethical and impact-oriented initiatives in their schools and neighborhoods. Participants described the training as “eye-opening,” noting how it helped them understand their role in shaping Liberia’s democratic future.

Community residents in Carver Mission felt the impact most tangibly. At a town hall organized for International Women’s Day, over 50 women shared experiences and strategies to engage more actively in civic life. “I feel empowered to speak up and make a difference in my community,” said one participant.

Meanwhile, members of the Governance and Anti-Corruption Fellowship Program gained practical tools to identify conflicts of interest, promote transparency, and hold public institutions accountable. Fellows noted that these sessions gave them a clearer understanding of how everyday citizens can influence ethical governance.

Participants collectively highlighted that March’s events were more than symbolic—they were a reminder that citizen involvement can lead to real change. From strategic dialogues on climate governance to intergenerational discussions on policy priorities, the initiatives offered Liberians tangible ways to engage with decision-makers and strengthen societal resilience.

Through these experiences, many attendees expressed renewed confidence in the power of civic participation, viewing it as a vital path toward a more accountable, inclusive, and responsive democracy.
