WASHINGTON D.C. – The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) is undergoing a leadership transition, with President Donald Trump initiating the replacement of Marine General Michael Langley as his two-year term as commander nears its end. Air Force Lieutenant General Dagvin R.M. Anderson has been named to succeed General Langley, taking command of the U.S. military’s operations and security cooperation efforts across the African continent.
This leadership change occurs against the backdrop of AFRICOM’s evolving history and its crucial purpose in U.S. foreign policy. Established on October 1, 2007, and achieving full operational capability a year later on October 1, 2008, AFRICOM was created to consolidate previously fragmented U.S. military engagement in Africa. Prior to its formation, responsibilities were divided among European, Central, and Pacific Commands, leading to a less cohesive approach to the continent. The decision to create a dedicated command stemmed from Africa’s increasing strategic importance due to concerns over terrorism, regional instability, and growing geopolitical competition.
AFRICOM’s mission is comprehensive, aiming to advance U.S. national interests while promoting regional security, stability, and prosperity in Africa. It operates with a “whole-of-government” approach, integrating military activities with diplomatic and developmental initiatives. A cornerstone of its work involves security cooperation and capacity building, where it partners with African nations to strengthen their defense capabilities through joint exercises, training, and assistance.

The command actively works to counter transnational threats, including violent extremist organizations across the Sahel and East Africa, often through intelligence sharing and, when directed and requested by African governments, limited military operations. AFRICOM also maintains readiness to respond to various crises, from humanitarian disasters to non-combatant evacuations. While its establishment initially raised some skepticism among certain African nations regarding potential motives, AFRICOM’s mandate continues to emphasize partnerships and support for African-led solutions to continental security challenges from its headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany. The incoming leadership will continue to navigate these complex dynamics, striving to enhance stability and protect U.S. interests across Africa.
