Comoros boosted their hopes of qualifying for a first-ever FIFA World Cup after securing a 2-0 win over the Central African Republic on Sunday in the African Zone qualifiers.

The victory lifts the island nation of fewer than 900,000 inhabitants to second place in Group I, trailing leaders Ghana by just one point.

Only the nine group winners across the African qualifying groups will earn direct spots at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

With four matches remaining, Comoros remain firmly in contention to make football history and join the elite nations at next year’s global showpiece.
