KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of the Congo – Ongoing armed violence in North Kivu Province in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) displaced more than 130,000 people in May alone, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
According to OCHA’s latest monthly report, the territories of Rutshuru, Lubero, Masisi, Beni, and Walikale remain critical hotspots for clashes between armed groups, significantly exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation. The report cited numerous civilian casualties and extensive destruction of critical infrastructure.
Furthermore, the conflict has led to the suspension of healthcare services, affecting thousands of vulnerable people, while humanitarian access remains “severely restricted in many areas.” Despite persistent efforts by aid organizations, urgent needs in shelter, sanitation, and civilian protection largely remain unmet.
Since January, security conditions in eastern DRC have sharply deteriorated, driven by a resurgence in fighting, notably involving the March 23 Movement (M23) rebel group. OCHA also indicated that more than 4.19 million people in North Kivu province are currently facing acute food insecurity, underscoring the multifaceted challenges facing the region.
