At least two children were tragically killed early Monday in Cameroon’s restive Far North region after stepping on an improvised explosive device (IED). The deadly incident occurred along the Bargaram-Abasouni Road in the Logone-et-Chari division, according to local and security sources.

The young victims were caught in the blast, which occurred in an area frequently targeted by extremist groups. While the identities of the children were not immediately released, the incident underscores the grave and indiscriminate threat posed by such devices to the civilian population, particularly in regions battling insurgency.

Security sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that the IED was likely planted by Boko Haram terrorists, who have long operated in Cameroon’s Far North, bordering Nigeria and Chad. The extremist group frequently employs IEDs to target both military convoys and unsuspecting civilians, transforming ordinary routes into perilous pathways.

The Logone-et-Chari division has been a flashpoint in the ongoing conflict with Boko Haram, where the group often conducts hit-and-run attacks, kidnappings, and plants explosives. This latest tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the enduring violence that continues to claim innocent lives in the region, despite efforts by Cameroonian forces and multinational joint task forces to counter the insurgency.
