Rwandan President Paul Kagame met with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi on Tuesday to discuss the pivotal role of nuclear energy in fostering economic transformation and Rwanda’s advancements in adopting small modular reactors (SMRs) and microreactors. Grossi is currently in Kigali for the inaugural Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa, a landmark event aimed at exploring atomic energy solutions for the continent.

The high-level discussion centered on Rwanda’s ambition to leverage nuclear technology as a clean, reliable power source to fuel its development agenda. SMRs and microreactors are particularly appealing to developing nations due to their smaller footprint, lower upfront costs, and increased flexibility compared to traditional large-scale nuclear power plants. These technologies are seen as crucial for accelerating electrification, especially in countries with growing energy demands and a commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

Director General Grossi’s visit and the summit underscore the growing interest across Africa in exploring nuclear energy to meet surging power needs and achieve sustainable development goals. Rwanda has been at the forefront of this interest, actively engaging with the IAEA to build regulatory frameworks and human capacity necessary for safe and secure nuclear energy adoption. The country’s focus on these advanced reactor technologies highlights a strategic vision for long-term energy independence and industrial growth.
