Liberian international referee Joel Doe has been officially confirmed as a match official for the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), solidifying his standing as one of West Africa’s premier football arbiters. The prestigious continental tournament, exclusively featuring players from their respective domestic leagues, is scheduled to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania from August 2–30, 2025.
Doe’s retention by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) follows his successful completion of the rigorous second CHAN Preparation Course for selected referees, held in Cairo, Egypt, in June. His consistent performance and adherence to CAF’s high standards have earned him this significant appointment, underscoring Liberia’s growing presence in continental football officiating.
This upcoming CHAN tournament marks Joel Doe’s third major CAF tournament appointment, a testament to his rising profile and experience. His distinguished career already includes officiating at the 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. Notably, he also played a crucial role at the U-20 AFCON in Egypt, where his officiating prowess earned him a spot in the grand final. Furthermore, Doe was a key match official in the 2022 WAFU A U-20 AFCON qualifiers held in Mauritania, further cementing his reputation across regional competitions.
Since becoming a FIFA-listed assistant referee in 2019, Doe has consistently been entrusted with high-profile matches across the continent. His portfolio includes officiating in FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, and various CAF Inter-Club Competitions, reflecting his versatility and reliability on the field. His selection for CHAN 2024 is celebrated in Liberia as a recognition of sustained efforts in football development and referee professionalism.
