NaFAA Signs Landmark Digital and Infrastructure Deals at #Kpongama2026

Monrovia, Liberia — The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) has signed two major agreements aimed at modernizing Liberia’s fishing industry, marking a significant step toward digitization and infrastructure development at the opening of the #Kpongama2026 conference.

The agreements, overseen by NaFAA Director General Emma Metieh Glassco, focus on expanding financial inclusion for fishermen and upgrading key coastal facilities critical to the sector’s growth.

Under the first deal, NaFAA partnered with Orange Money Liberia to introduce digital payment systems across the fisheries value chain. The initiative is expected to reduce reliance on cash transactions, improve transparency, and make financial services more accessible to thousands of artisanal fishermen operating in remote coastal areas.

The partnership also includes the rollout of a mobile-based early warning system designed to provide real-time weather updates and emergency alerts to fishermen at sea. Officials say the technology addresses longstanding safety concerns in the industry, where limited access to timely information has often exposed fishermen to significant risks.

In a separate agreement, NaFAA signed a deal with Electrans Limited to accelerate development of the Robertsport Landing Cluster in Robertsport, one of Liberia’s key fishing hubs. The project is expected to enhance processing and storage capacity, particularly through improved cold-chain infrastructure.

Authorities say the upgrades will help reduce post-harvest losses, increase the market value of fish products for both domestic consumption and export, and create employment opportunities in coastal communities, particularly in Grand Cape Mount County.

The initiatives form part of broader government efforts to develop Liberia’s “blue economy,” shifting the fisheries sector from largely informal operations to a more structured, technology-driven system. Analysts note that improved infrastructure and digital integration could significantly boost productivity, safety, and income levels for local fishing communities.

The agreements signal a growing emphasis on linking technology, infrastructure, and economic policy to unlock the full potential of Liberia’s marine resources.
