Nigerian President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu received a grand welcome to Saint Lucia on Saturday, as Governor General Mr. Cyril Errol Melchiades Charles personally greeted the West African leader. The reception was marked by full military honours, underscoring the significance of the diplomatic visit.
Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre shared his enthusiasm for the visit via his verified Facebook page, stating, “Together, we stand in unity as President Tinubu inspected the Guard of Honour executed by the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) accompanied by the Royal Saint Lucia Police Band. This proud display reflects the professionalism of our officers and symbolizes our commitment to advancing new relations and mutual respect between Saint Lucia and Nigeria.”
President Tinubu’s arrival in Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia, on Saturday afternoon marks the first leg of a two-nation tour that will also take him to Brazil for the 2025 BRICS Summit. His visit to Saint Lucia is a state visit aimed at deepening Nigeria’s engagement with Caribbean nations and strengthening South-South cooperation.
According to official statements, President Tinubu’s itinerary in Saint Lucia will include courtesy calls on the Governor-General and Prime Minister Philip Pierre on Sunday. A significant highlight will be his address to a special joint session of the Senate and the House of Assembly of Saint Lucia on Monday, which will be attended by Heads of Government from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), senior Saint Lucian officials, diplomatic corps members, and the Nigerian community in Saint Lucia. A high-level working luncheon with OECS leaders is also scheduled to discuss enhanced cooperation, particularly in economic partnerships and cultural exchange. The President is also expected to visit the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College to foster educational collaboration.

The visit underscores Nigeria’s strategic intent to strengthen diplomatic and economic relations with Caribbean states, aligning with the African Union’s Sixth Region framework, which recognizes the African diaspora as a vital development partner.
