Nigeria’s Ex‑President to Lead Global Crisis Diplomacy Under U.N. Mandate
By: TPA News Desk | editor@thepointafricanews.com

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has been appointed as the United Nations Global Crisis Envoy, marking a significant milestone for African representation in international diplomacy. The announcement was made following consultations among key global powers, including the United States, United Kingdom, France, China, and Russia, in coordination with the United Nations.
Jonathan becomes the first African former Head of State to hold the role, which draws parallels to the former Quartet envoy position once held by ex-UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, who represented the UN, EU, US, and Russia in the Middle East.
The former Nigerian leader brings to the role decades of experience in governance, peacebuilding, and mediation. Since leaving office in 2015, Jonathan has led several conflict resolution missions across Africa, including electoral mediation efforts in Mali, The Gambia, and South Sudan under the auspices of the African Union and ECOWAS.
His appointment has been widely welcomed across Nigeria and beyond, with observers noting it reflects growing international confidence in African leadership to help navigate complex global crises.
