President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., on Tuesday, commissioned the newly renovated maternity ward and triage unit at the Tubmanburg Government Hospital in Bomi County.
The project—fully funded and spearheaded by First Lady Kartumu Yarta Boakai—is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery for mothers and newborns across the country. The facility’s upgrades include upgraded delivery beds, essential medical equipment, sanitation improvements, and expanded patient care space, all of which are expected to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates in the region.
Speaking at the dedication ceremony, President Boakai emphasized that the facility is more than a structure—it represents the government’s renewed commitment to saving lives and uplifting healthcare standards.
“This facility is not just a building,” the President said. “It is a symbol of hope, care, and the value we place on every Liberian life—especially our mothers and newborns. I commend the First Lady for her vision and compassion that have brought this critical improvement to the people of Bomi.”
The ceremony drew a wide range of dignitaries including Second Lady Madam Synleseh Stephanie Dahn-Koung, AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, senior government officials, health workers, community leaders, and hundreds of citizens who gathered to witness the historic event.
First Lady Kartumu Yarta Boakai—whose foundation is actively working to improve maternal care—called the project “a small but vital step toward ensuring no woman dies while giving life.”
“Too many of our women still face unsafe conditions when they come to deliver,” she said. “This initiative is a small step toward making maternal health safer and more dignified for our mothers.”
The program concluded with a guided tour of the facility, where staff members expressed gratitude for the transformation and pledged to deliver quality care. Community leaders and local authorities praised the Boakai administration for its people-centered approach to development, particularly in health and education.
The Government of Liberia reaffirmed its pledge to expand healthcare infrastructure and ensure that every Liberian, regardless of location, has access to quality medical services.
