West African leaders on Sunday elected Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio as the new chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), during a high-level summit held in Abuja, Nigeria. He takes over from Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at a time when the regional bloc faces mounting challenges, including military coups, terrorism, political fragmentation, and weakened trade integration.

President Bio’s selection comes as ECOWAS works to restore its influence in the face of major political upheavals. Three member states—Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger—have withdrawn from the bloc following recent coups and have aligned themselves under the newly formed Alliance of Sahel States, distancing from ECOWAS and its democratic framework.

In his first remarks as chair, Bio pledged to promote political stability, strengthen collective security, and rebuild trust among member states. “ECOWAS must remain the anchor of peace and democratic governance in West Africa,” he said, vowing to lead with diplomacy and accountability.

The summit also addressed regional security, particularly the threat of violent extremism spreading across the Sahel and into coastal states. Member states urged deeper coordination on intelligence sharing, border security, and humanitarian responses.

President Bio’s leadership comes amid growing concerns about ECOWAS’s credibility. The bloc’s sanctions on Niger, following the July 2023 military takeover, sparked backlash and contributed to the country’s withdrawal. Observers say Bio will need to balance firmness on constitutional rule with pragmatic diplomacy to restore unity.

With West Africa’s trade corridors under pressure and integration goals lagging, ECOWAS leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to revitalizing transport, energy, and customs cooperation.
