SuperSport has confirmed the passing of longtime sports commentator Phumlani Msibi, a beloved figure in South African sports broadcasting, who died on Friday, June 20, following a brief illness. He was 57.
Msibi, often referred to by colleagues and fans as “Mr Versatile,” became a household name for his vibrant and bilingual coverage of various sports, including football, boxing, horse racing, and athletics. His distinctive style and deep knowledge of the game made him one of the most recognizable voices on the SuperSport network.
“Phumlani was more than a broadcaster—he was the voice of the game for millions,” said SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha in a statement. “His energy, professionalism, and warmth left a lasting impression on everyone he worked with. His loss will be deeply felt.”
A native of Durban, Msibi’s career began at the SABC, before moving to SuperSport in the late 1990s. He made history as the network’s first bilingual boxing commentator and quickly expanded his role to cover major tournaments, including the Premier Soccer League (PSL), where he became well-known for his post-match phrase: “Coach, thoughts please?”
Tributes poured in from across the sports world. The PSL announced that a moment of silence will be observed during upcoming fixtures in his honor. Political parties, including the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), also expressed condolences, describing Msibi as “a national asset to South African sports culture.”
Colleagues remembered him as a mentor and trailblazer who opened doors for younger broadcasters. “He made us feel seen—especially those of us working in our mother tongues,” said a fellow SuperSport presenter.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
