Tanzania’s High‑Speed Internet Market Surges as Fiber Connectivity Expand

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania — Tanzania is witnessing a rapid expansion in high‑speed internet access as fiber‑optic connectivity reaches deeper into urban and rural areas, supporting growth across the country’s digital economy.

Industry data show that internet penetration in Tanzania has climbed to over 80 percent, driven in large part by the rollout of fiber‑to‑the‑home (FTTH) networks. Over the past two years, FTTH connections have increased by 157 percent, according to government and telecom sector officials.

The expanding fiber footprint is enabling faster connectivity for households, corporate offices, and digital platforms, including fintech services that are gaining traction across the East African nation. Telecommunications providers report rising demand from businesses and consumers alike, with stable pricing and a competitive business environment cited as key factors in uptake.

Officials say that a supportive regulatory framework has helped attract investment from both domestic and international carriers, facilitating broader coverage in major cities as well as emerging towns. Stable pricing, which has made high‑speed internet more affordable for households and small businesses, is also seen as a driver of adoption.

Experts attribute the surge in connectivity to a combination of infrastructure investment, regulatory reform, and market competition. They say that reliable high‑speed internet is increasingly essential for sectors such as e‑commerce, online education, and mobile banking, all of which have grown significantly in recent years.

Despite clear progress, challenges remain—particularly in extending high‑speed coverage to more remote rural communities where infrastructure costs are higher and demand density lower. Nevertheless, Tanzania’s recent connectivity boom marks an important milestone in its broader digital transformation, positioning the country as a rising hub in East Africa’s technology landscape.
