U.S. Envoy Barrack Reveals Ongoing Syria-Israel Negotiations

U.S. Special Envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, has confirmed that Syria’s interim government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, is engaged in direct, behind-the-scenes negotiations with Israel. Barrack emphasized that Syria does not seek conflict with Israel and urged the international community to allow the new administration time to establish its approach to regional relations.
These revelations come amid reports from Israeli officials, including National Security Council Chairman Tzachi Hanegbi, who have acknowledged ongoing direct contacts between Syria and Israel. Hanegbi noted that discussions are focused on potential normalization of relations, marking a significant shift from the previous decade of hostility.
President al-Sharaa has publicly stated that Syria is committed to upholding the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement with Israel and is actively working to prevent further Israeli military actions in southern Syria.
The United States has taken steps to support these diplomatic efforts, including lifting certain sanctions on Syria and removing its designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. However, a six-month congressional review period remains before the designation is officially rescinded.
