More than 500 Ugandans, predominantly students and some businesspeople, are reportedly stranded in Israel due to the ongoing conflict with Iran, the Daily Monitor newspaper reported on Thursday. The Israeli Embassy in Nairobi, which oversees diplomatic relations with Uganda, has confirmed that arrangements are actively underway to repatriate these citizens, with plans to facilitate their return via Egypt.
The escalating conflict between Israel and Iran has led to significant disruptions, including the closure of airspace over both countries, leaving hundreds of Ugandans unable to depart. The Israeli Embassy indicated that while the exact number of stranded Ugandans is not definitively known, their records show approximately 500 Ugandan citizens currently holding legal visas in Israel.
Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is closely coordinating with its diplomatic missions in the region, including the Ugandan Embassy in Cairo, to ensure the safe passage and evacuation of its nationals. Efforts include engaging with governments of countries bordering the conflict zones, such as Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Jordan, to secure gratis (free) visas upon arrival for the evacuees, as well as alerting other regional embassies in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar for transit assistance.
While logistical challenges persist due to the volatile security situation and airspace restrictions, both the Israeli and Ugandan authorities are working to provide safe passage for those wishing to return home. Ugandan officials have encouraged their nationals in Israel to register with the Ugandan Embassy in Cairo or through official Israeli channels to receive assistance.
