OTTAWA, Canada – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has departed the Group of Seven (G7) summit, hosted by Canada, securing new aid commitments from his Canadian counterparts but expressing profound frustration over what he termed a “crisis” in diplomacy. His remarks specifically highlighted a missed opportunity to directly press U.S. President Donald Trump for additional crucial weaponry, a key objective for Kyiv amidst the ongoing conflict.

The G7 summit, which concluded its main sessions today, saw leaders from the world’s leading economies discuss pressing global issues, with the war in Ukraine being a central focus. President Zelenskiy’s presence was aimed at rallying continued international support and accelerating the delivery of military assistance.

Upon his departure, President Zelenskiy confirmed that Canada, as the summit’s host, had pledged significant new aid to Ukraine, though specific details of the package were not immediately disclosed. This commitment builds on Canada’s consistent support for Kyiv since the conflict’s onset.

However, Zelenskiy’s parting statements were overshadowed by his evident disappointment regarding a scheduled bilateral meeting with President Trump that, according to Ukrainian officials, either did not materialize or failed to yield the substantive discussions Zelenskiy had hoped for. “Diplomacy is in crisis when direct communication channels, especially for critical needs like defense, are not fully utilized,” President Zelenskiy told reporters. He emphasized the urgent requirement for more sophisticated weaponry to counter ongoing aggression, lamenting the inability to directly convey the pressing need to the U.S. leader.

The perceived diplomatic setback comes at a critical juncture for Ukraine, which continues to rely heavily on international military aid. President Trump’s stance on military assistance to Ukraine has been a subject of intense international scrutiny, making a direct and productive engagement with him a high priority for Kyiv. The G7 summit’s final communiqué is expected to reiterate strong support for Ukraine, but Zelenskiy’s comments suggest a growing concern within Kyiv about the pace and scope of future military provisions from key allies.
