Syria’s Interior Ministry has officially confirmed that clashes in the predominantly Druze city of Sweida have come to an end. The ministry declared that government forces have cleared the city of Bedouin tribal fighters and restored calm following a major troop deployment, marking the implementation of a new ceasefire agreement.

The announcement aligns with international reporting confirming that Syrian forces were deployed swiftly once President Ahmed al-Sharaa announced the ceasefire. The move followed days of intense sectarian violence between Druze militias and Bedouin tribal groups that resulted in hundreds of deaths and widespread destruction. Several sources note that both sides remain on high alert despite the declared truce.

According to official statements, security units were dispatched across the city and surrounding areas, helping establish checkpoints and separate rival armed groups. The Interior Ministry said Sweida has now been “cleared of tribal fighters” and street-level hostilities halted.

Despite these developments, external sources confirm that violence persisted in some neighborhoods following the initial declaration. Reports describe resumed clashes, looting, and civilian displacement even after deployment efforts began. The death toll from the violence has been placed between 300 and nearly 1,000, depending on the monitor.

International actors, including U.S. envoy Thomas Barrack, Israel, Turkey, and Jordan, backed the ceasefire agreement, though conflicting positions emerged within Damascus, and skepticism persists among sections of the Druze community. Israel conducted airstrikes on Syrian military positions, citing the need to protect Druze civilians.

Meanwhile, UN humanitarian agencies report more than 87,000 people displaced across Sweida province, with hospitals in critical condition and Food, water and medical supplies in severe shortage. The crisis has prompted urgent appeals for access and assistance amid widespread destruction.
