STAND Calls for Expulsion of Guinean Ambassador Over Sovereignty Concerns

The Solidarity and Trust for a New Day (STAND) has called on the Liberian government to expel Guinea’s ambassador, accusing authorities of failing to respond decisively to what it describes as violations of the country’s sovereignty.

In a statement issued on April 6, STAND criticized the administration of President Joseph Boakai, alleging that it has shown weakness in addressing tensions with Guinea. The group urged the government to invoke Article 9 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which allows a host country to declare a foreign diplomat persona non grata.

STAND also argued that, at a minimum, Liberia should recall its ambassador to Guinea as a formal protest against what it termed “provocations” along the border.

The group further linked the current tensions to the controversial 2024 transfer of Ibrahima Khalil Cherif to Guinea, a move it claims undermined Liberia’s judicial authority and emboldened Guinean authorities. It additionally made allegations regarding the transfer of arms and equipment to Liberian security forces, though these claims have not been independently verified.

The Liberian government has not publicly responded to the latest statement, and there has been no official confirmation of any decision to expel diplomatic representatives or escalate measures against Guinea.

STAND said it is considering further civic actions in collaboration with civil society groups, as tensions surrounding the issue continue to draw public attention.
