Local civil society leaders and provincial military sources reported that heavily armed fighters descended on the rural community late into the night, opening fire on residents before systematically setting fire to residential quarters and critical infrastructure. The rapid destruction forced hundreds of panic-stricken villagers to flee into surrounding tropical forests toward the nearby commercial hub of Beni. ,p> The slaughter marks one of the deadliest single assaults in Beni territory in recent months, exposing persistent security vulnerabilities across eastern Congo despite ongoing joint military operations conducted by the Congolese army (FARDC) and the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
Originally founded in Uganda during the late 1990s as an anti-Kampala insurgent movement, the ADF relocated into the dense jungles of eastern DRC, where it eventually pledged allegiance to the Islamic State's Central Africa Province (ISCAP). Over the past decade, the group has transformed into a lethal transnational militia responsible for thousands of civilian deaths, mass abductions, and targeted attacks on healthcare facilities across North Kivu and Ituri provinces.
Security personnel and humanitarian teams deployed to Cantine-Aloya to conduct search-and-recovery operations, warning that the civilian death toll could rise further as search efforts continue through the surrounding brush. Meanwhile, displaced families remain stranded without shelter or emergency medical care, highlighting the acute humanitarian crisis worsening across the region.
